Hilton Head Community Information
Hilton Head Island is alive and rich with historical roots dating back to Spanish adventurers and Civil War lore. The Island was known as a strategic military point and became pivotal in several military engagements. It was also known for its rich bounty of Sea Island Rice crops.
After the Civil War, land on Hilton Head Island was deeded over to the many families of freed slaves. The enjoyed the bounties of the Island until the pristine sandy white beaches and abundance of natural beauty were discovered by land developers. Though it was never imagined possible by many, Hilton Head Island grew into a much sought after destination resort.
As the local population grew, the Island became a township and, with the help of many visionaries, went about the process of developing the numerous outstanding infrastructures we have today, such as Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics, Volunteers In Medicine, Public School Systems, Boys and Girls Club, Island Recreation Center, Neighborhood Parks and Bike Trail Systems and the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.
